Joe Manganiello Reveals He Was the "Unanimous Choice" for Reacher — and Blames Tom Cruise and Sofía Vergara for Losing It

Joe Manganiello has never been shy about the roles that got away, but his latest revelation is a blockbuster. In his new memoir Bloodlines, released on October 13, the True Blood and Magic Mike star claims he was the producers' unanimous choice to play Jack Reacher in Amazon Prime Video's hit series — before the role went to Alan Ritchson.

The Role He Was Born to Play

According to Manganiello's account, the story began in January 2020, shortly after he underwent surgery to remove part of his large intestine. He met with Skydance Media executive Don Granger, who reportedly told him: "You are the closest thing to Jack Reacher that I've ever met in my entire life."

For fans of Lee Child's novels, the fit seemed obvious. Manganiello is 6-foot-5 and built like the fictional former military policeman — a towering figure who towers over almost every room he enters. The producers, he writes, were in agreement that he was their man.

Where It All Went Wrong

The deal, however, was far from done. Manganiello recalls that Amazon Studios chief Jen Salke felt she had been left out of the casting process and wanted to consider other candidates. What followed was a four-week wait that ended with a request for Manganiello to prepare additional dialogue for another screen test — this time going head-to-head with Smallville star Tom Welling.

Eventually, the role went to Alan Ritchson, who has since made Jack Reacher his own across multiple seasons of the hit series. Manganiello, meanwhile, was left wondering what might have been.

The Tom Cruise Theory

Here's where the memoir takes a dramatic turn. Manganiello speculates that his connection to ex-wife Sofía Vergara may have worked against him — and that Tom Cruise, who starred in two Jack Reacher films and dated Vergara years earlier, could have influenced the outcome.

To be clear, Manganiello admits he has no proof that Cruise had anything to do with the casting decision. But the theory has set Hollywood tongues wagging: could the biggest movie star on the planet have quietly nixed the competition for a character he once played himself?

Why This Story Has Legs

Whatever the truth, Manganiello's account offers a rare window into how high-stakes casting really works — the politics, the egos, and the studio chiefs who want a second look. Reacher has become one of Amazon's biggest original hits, and it's hard not to imagine an alternate universe where Manganiello's Reacher strides across the screen instead of Ritchson's.

It's also not lost on observers that Tom Welling, the other finalist named in the memoir, had his own viral moment this week after an accidentally revealing Instagram photo sent the internet into a frenzy. The Reacher casting race of 2020, it turns out, featured two of the most talked-about actors of 2026.

What's Next

Manganiello's memoir is expected to keep generating headlines as readers work through its revelations. As for Reacher, the series rolls on with Ritchson in the lead — and with a prequel and further seasons reportedly in the works, the franchise shows no signs of slowing down.

Whether Manganiello would ever get another shot at the character remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: this is the Hollywood "what if" story fans will be debating for a long time.
